Starting in Nebraska in 1915 and later moving into Colorado, John Kautz’ German-born parents, Fred and Marie, topped sugar beets by lantern “because there wasn’t enough daylight” and slept in mud huts. Eventually settling in Lodi, CA, the Kautz family began farming there in 1926. John grew up with a love of agriculture and at aged 35 he started his own farm. This started out with humble beginnings, but eventually grew over time to include an array of wonderful vineyards. The family discovered they had a real knack for grape growing, and today they own several incredible and acclaimed wineries in California. The Ironstone Winery is their flagship, and remains family run to this day.
