Taylor, Fladgate & Yeatman, to give it its full name, was founded in 1692 and is still owned by descendents of the original Yeatmans. It arguably produces the greatest of all vintage ports, with an extraordinary depth of flavour and a capacity for long ageing that is almost unrivalled. Its characteristic note of violets comes from the famous Quinta de Vargellas vineyard.
Taylor's is accepted by most wine connoisseurs to be the greatest of all port shippers, particularly famous for its sublime and long-lived Vintage ports, and for old, distinguished Tawny ports. But Taylor's is also an innovative house, pioneering the successful Late Bottled Vintage style which has been copied by almost every other shipper, and was also the first to commercially launch a modern single-quinta Vintage Port. Now in its fourth century, the company is still thriving, with wine quality remaining the firm's only consideration.
