Perhaps no other country is so strongly associated with a single grape variety as Argentina is with Malbec. That’s not to say there aren’t good Argentinian wines made from other grape varieties (there’s even the odd excellent Argentinian white wine) - just that they have tended to play second fiddle. If there is a national style, it definitely leans more towards the robust, full-bodied and oaky end of the spectrum, and the pricier and more prestigious the wine gets, the more pronounced this becomes. There are some great wines in this style, but if it’s not your thing, there are also plenty of cheaper, elegant Argentinian wines to choose from.

Bramare Malbec 'Lujan de Cuyo' 2016, Vina Cobos

£33.95 £28.95

Vina Cobos is the winery belonging to Paul Hobbs, the winemaker responsible for the Malbec revolution that happened in the late 80's in Argentina. Starting out at Catena, Argentina's most respected winery, Paul decided to go it alone and establish his winery in 1998. All his wines are elegant and subtle, highly powerful and full flavoured. The Bramare range highlights the diversity of the Mendoza wine regions, and shows the incredible potential of the Luján de Cuyo appellation.
