While other countries are now scrambling around looking to rediscover (and replant) their native grape varieties as interest continues to increase in distinctive, characterful wines, Portugal can carry on as it has been all along. Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Trincadeira, Jaen, Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Baga, Arinto, Bical, Encruzado, the list of indigenous Portugese grape varieties goes on, and the wines they produce are increasing in quality all the time. The variety and interest available in Portugese table wine is exceptional, but the most famous wine of Portugal remains Port. Traditional vintage Port is still seriously undervalued and is the flagship, but increasingly other, more approachable styles are being made and appreciated for their outstanding quality.
