Tuscany is the home of Sangiovese, central Italy’s predominant grape variety which is responsible both for some of the country’s very best wines and a lot of disappointingly feeble red. But it is also a hotbed of innovation, the region where Solaia, Sassicaia and the like dared to experiment with Bordeaux grape varieties in their ‘Supertuscan’ blends. Although the trend is now moving very firmly back in the opposite direction, towards native grape varieties and traditional methods, the Supertuscan movement is at least partly responsible for pushing the Italian wine industry to modernise and produce cleaner, more consistent wine across the board. Tuscany is now turning out a bewildering array of excellent wine from the traditional to the ultra modern and in all colours and styles.

Scrio 1999, Le Macchiole

Le Macchiole describe Scrio as ‘the Prodigal son.’ It casuses them worry and concern, makes them work hard, but after all that it gives great satisfaction. A full-bodied Syrah, this is ripe and classy.
