Domaine Jean Grivot, Richebourg Grand Cru

"The cool, reserved and elegant nose displays moderate secondary character on the aromas of violets, spice and plumy dark fruit where there is only a trace of herbal tea-like nuances. The suave, sweet and mouth filling middle weight flavors are underpinned by softening if not completely resolved tannins and solid if not exceptional length on the ever-so-mildly drying finish. This is really quite good in the context of the vintage and while the balance isn't perfect, it's good enough to make this more than just enjoyable. Note that from an aging perspective that this has reached an inflection point where it could be drunk now or held for a few more years first; I should further observe that there is no rush to drink up and this should easily hold for another decade though I am not sure that it will necessarily be the better for it." - Allen Meadows

Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select

"The 1998 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select was produced during a challenging vintage in Napa Valley with an incredible heat wave in mid-July, with temperatures at the Hillside Select property hitting an astonishing 114 degrees. This was brutal for the grapes, but a strict selection, and as Doug and John Shafer said, “We make no excuses at this winery.” Certainly, this was one of the great successes in this vintage. Very tiny yields from small, rather shriveled berries produced a super-extracted, rich, intense wine that has some smokey barbecue notes along with blackcurrants, cedar wood, wet rocks and background oak and burning embers. There's almost a Graves-like, scorched earth character to this vintage. This medium to full-bodied wine is intense and undeniably one of the top ten wines in Napa Valley. Moreover, it should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years." - Robert Parker

Opus One

"The 1997 Opus One tastes like it was made yesterday, not 16 years ago. One of the most opulent, racy wines in this vertical, the 1997 literally explodes from the glass. Juicy dark red cherries, menthol, tobacco and licorice all make an appearance as the 1997 opens up over time. Readers holding the 1997 are in for a thrill. Even though the growing season was defined by hot weather, a short maturation cycle and a large crop, the wine turned out beautifully. In 1997 the blend is 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 4% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot, a first for Opus One." - Antonio Galloni

Opus One

"Freshly cut flowers, raspberries, anise and savory herbs jump from the glass in the 1995 Opus One. A beautifully bright, focused wine, the 1995 stands out for its high-toned aromatics and fabulous balance. All the elements are in the right place. This is a distinctly pretty, feminine Opus One that is all about grace. An attractive aromatic lift rounds things out nicely. Stylistically, the 1995 belongs to the wines of similarly high rainfall vintages such as 1986 and 2011. The 1995 is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 2% Malbec." - Antonio Galloni

Domaine de la Pousse d'Or, Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi

"The ripe and ultra-fresh aromas are from the darker side of the fruit spectrum while including plenty of spice, warm earth, menthol and plenty of sauvage character. There is both fine detail and a beguiling texture to the equally broad-shouldered and even more mineral-inflected flavors that possess even better complexity on the balanced and hugely long finish. Unusually, this appears to be just a bit less structured than the Bressandes and should also be approachable on the younger side if that's your preference." - Allen Meadows

Château Grand Puy Lacoste

"The 2014 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has a much more approachable nose than usual, vibrant with red cherries, wild strawberry and cedar aromas, backed up with mineral-soaked blackberry fruit. This gathers momentum wonderfully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. The acidity is very well judged with purity and elegance on the finish, if not the structure or backbone commonly found is very top vintages. I've been a bit conservative with my score at the moment, but I am sure it will prove its worth with 3-5 more years in bottle, hence the plus sign. One to watch." - Neal Martin

Château Du Tertre

"The 2014 Du Tertre has a light blackberry and raspberry scented bouquet with a noticeable undergrowth element that I was not anticipating. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. There is not enormous weight or body here, but it is certainly balanced with neatly integrated oak towards the poised finish. Probably an earlier-drinking Margaux to enjoy over the next 10-12 years. Maybe I was just expecting a little more substance in view of its showing in barrel, nevertheless it is still a respectable 2014 from Alexandre van Beek and his team." - Neal Martin

Château Leoville Poyferre

"The 2014 Leoville-Poyferre was surprisingly backward and tight on the nose (usually it is the most expressive and generous Léoville in its youth). The precision and focus is intact, but it is broody and sultry at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with firm structure, which suggests that it has turned volte face since its opulent showing in barrel. Overall, this comes across as perhaps a slightly more austere and masculine wine from Didier Cuvelier, though that is not a criticism, just an observation. I would like to see a little more persistence on the finish, but the tidings bode well for this mercurial and fascinating Léoville-Poyferre. I can see it improving with bottle age, hence the plus sign against my score." - Neal Martin

Château Rauzan Segla

"The 2015 Rauzan-Segla (Rausan-Segla) was a magnificent wine out of barrel, but what matters, of course, is how you and I find this Margaux in bottle. Well, it has a disarmingly beautiful, almost haunting bouquet with pure black fruit laced with cedar, orange blossom and violet aromas that blossom in the glass. I cannot recollect a Rauzan-Segla as delineated as this. The palate is medium-bodied but with ripe, quite bold tannin that lends this wine much more volume than in previous vintages. This just fills the mouth and satiates the senses. There is a fine line of acidity here and tints of black truffle. There is a wondrous mineral tension on the finish and yet this is a Margaux that is determined and succeeds in satiating all the senses...apart from sound. So put your favorite musician on and savor this exceptional wine over the coming years. A benchmark." - Neal Martin

DRC, Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru

"A broad array of classic Vosne spice elements add nuance to the super-fresh mildly earthy dark berry and rose petal aromas. The rich, full-bodied and palate staining big-bodied flavors flash a taut muscularity before culminating in a beautifully focused and precise finish that offers excellent persistence. Not surprisingly at only 10 years of age, this is still very young and a wine that will need at least 5 to 8 more years of bottle age first." - Allen Meadows

Château Latour a Pomerol

"Tasted at the Latour-à-Pomerol vertical in London. The 2005 Château Latour-à-Pomerol is no more, no less, than a very beautiful Pomerol that is only just beginning to flex its muscles. It has a divine nose of blackberry, bilberry, warm gravel and a sprig of wild mint all with very fine delineation. The palate is initially supple in the mouth, but watch out because there is real backbone and structure to this Pomerol. What I most admire is the lucidity of this wine. There is brightness, you could almost say a sense of gaiety, not a word I often attribute to this cru. It still needs to knit together on the finish but otherwise, expect greatness from this tour de force Pomerol in the future. Tasted December 2015." - Neal Martin

DRC, La Tache Grand Cru

"Like the 2005, this really has not changed significantly though at 8 years of age, one can begin to see a subtle amount of aromatic development but I stress that it's subtle and overall, this remains quite primary aromatically speaking. The usual La Tâche aromatic fireworks are present as the highly perfumed, seductive, spicy and pungent floral notes make for an utterly brilliant nose. The broad-shouldered flavors remain somewhat understated and while there is superb concentration, the unexpected sense of reserve I noted in my original review is still here as there is even a certain coolness that is extremely rare for the 2003 vintage. Perhaps equally unexpected is that the '03 La Tâche is essentially a wine that marries finesse and purity with power because even though it is dense, it remains balanced and never heavy. To be sure, the effects of the vintage are noticeable as the finish is very ripe with notes of plum, mocha and coffee. Again, though this is only 8 years of age, nothing has changed to modify my view that this should be capable of lasting 50 years, indeed I have extended my initial drinking window somewhat. As with the 2005, this should ultimately be a great La Tâche though it's going to require plenty of patience until it gets there." - Allen Meadows

DRC, Echezeaux Grand Cru

"Still deep ruby color. A wonderfully fresh, cool and relatively restrained nose reflects notes of ultra-spicy and floral dark berry fruit nose evidences only mild hints of secondary character. The seductively rich yet attractively vibrant medium weight flavors are shaped by a still moderately firm core of ripe tannins before culminating in a relatively robust and powerful finish. While with 30+ minutes of air this could be approached with pleasure, for my taste the 2002 Ech is still very much on the way up and will likely need the better part of another 4 to 7 years before it arrives at its full apogee." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Francois Lamarche, La Grande Rue Grand Cru

"I appear to have under-rated this impressive effort and while the '01 LGR is still displaying ample wood spice influence, it no longer dominates the highly perfumed and elegant black fruit and earth aromas that lead to rich, full and racy medium plus weight flavors that are underpinned by dusty, refined and sophisticated tannins all wrapped in a sappy, pure, intense and beautifully long, indeed explosive finish. Purists may find a bit more wood than might be considered ideal but it doesn't compromise the balance and this should age beautifully. In a word, terrific." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Comte de Vogue, Musigny Grand Cru VV

"I have tasted this many times since I originally reviewed it and the '01 Musigny has displayed quite a bit of bottle variation with some examples being fantastic and others being almost difficult to like. There is some secondary development now evident on the very spicy nose that also displays notes of sandalwood, soy, dried flowers and dried herbs on the mostly red berry fruit nose. There is fine detail and ample minerality present on the intense, powerful and focused medium-bodied flavors that exhibit impeccably good balance on the explosively long finish. For my taste this is getting close to its peak but it's not quite there yet so I would suggest holding for another 2 to 4 years first. On the less impressive side, some bottles are drying out or have displayed lactic and/or cheese-like, menthol and rubber-like aromas that I have also found on a recent bottle of the Les Amoureuses (see herein)." - Allen Meadows

Dominus Estate, Napanook

"Bottled in July 2017, Dominus’ more approachable, less tannic sister wine, Napanook, is a blend this year of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2015 Napanook Proprietary Red Wine is redolent of crème de cassis, potpourri, plum preserves and violets with hints of dark chocolate, menthol, licorice and charcoal. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is densely packed with black fruit preserves and earthy layers, supported by firm, ripe, fine-grained tannins and finishing with great length." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate

Domaine Coche Dury, Meursault Rougeots

"Here too there is a hint of mineral reduction to the highly complex, ripe and fresh aromas of apple, pear and hazelnut that are trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The medium-bodied flavors are replete with palate coating dry extract that adds a sense of volume as well as buffers the moderately firm acid spine on the beautifully long and equally complex finish. In short, this is a knockout Meursault villages." - Allen Meadows

Château Carmes Haut Brion

"The 2015 Les Carmes Haut-Brion has a beautiful bouquet with layers of red cherry, raspberry and cedar, a touch of cassis that emerges with time. This is a very sophisticated bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, wonderful structure and focus. This is precise but full of personality, the Cabernet Franc very expressive on the bell pepper-tinged finish. This is a very impressive Les Carmes Haut Brion with the substance to merit long-term cellaring (if you wish). This is definitely one to watch." - Neal Martin
