Gaja Chardonnay Gaia e Rey

"From a hot vintage, the 2015 Langhe Gaia & Rey shows similar excellence as presented in the 2013 vintage, although its attributes are different. That wine was direct and linear reflecting the cooler summer months. This wine, however, promises to be more tonic, sharp and focused despite the warmer growing season. This pure expression of Chardonnay is made in a more reductive style in order to highlight that nervous and bright vein at the back. The winery is switching over to older barrique (some as old as a decade) and botte grande to allow for less oxygen in winemaking. The wine opens to aromas of Golden Delicious apple, white peach, wild sage, ginger and honey. This white wine shows enormous potential for further aromatic development and intensity." - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Gaja Barbaresco Sori Tildin

"Dark berries, rose petals plums, spices, mocha and licorice emerge from the 2010 Sorì Tildìn. The 2010 is a big, rich wine with surprising mid-palate density and power, perhaps just a bit less nuance than in most years. Layers of fruit build to a huge, enveloping finish supported by broad brush strokes of tannin. With time in the glass, some of the more typical floral notes of this site come through, but in the end the 2010 remains a bit of a brute. The 2010 is promising, even if it is a bit wild and not as polished as is typically the case. It will be interesting to see where the 2010 goes. Will it find its typical finesse, or remain a powerhouse?" - Antonio Galloni

Lopez de Heredia, Vina Tondonia Reserva

"The 2005 Viña Tondonia Reserva is a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho, 5% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo from their vineyards in the meander of the Ebro River, where they have some 100 hectares of vineyards. The wine fermented in the original oak vats that are now some 140 years of age. There is no temperature control and malolactic was also in the vat. The wine was transferred to oak barrels where it slowly matured in their deep, humid caves for no less than six years. After this, it was bottled unfiltered after being fined with egg whites. I think the quality gap between the Reserva and Gran Reserva has been getting smaller since the 2001 vintage and this 2005 is nothing short of exceptional. It's clean and complex, with more freshness. The wine is very spicy and with a palate that feels very balanced, livelier than in the past. It has a long finish where the flavors are clean. Easy to drink and very pleasurable. Some 250,000 bottles were produced in 2005." - Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

Domaine Comte de Vogue, Musigny Grand Cru VV

"An extravagantly spicy and notably ripe yet very fresh nose offers up a very pretty mix of both red and black currant aromas that are beginning to display the initial hints of secondary development while being trimmed in discreet hints of wood and menthol. The beautifully elegant and gorgeously textured flavors exude a lovely minerality before culminating in a rich, round and utterly delicious finish that delivers excellent persistence. This is not especially big or dense as de Vogüé Musigny goes but is tautly muscular and defined. For my taste this has arrived at the very front end of its peak drinkability though I underscore that it should age gracefully for many years to come. Consistent notes." - Allen Meadows

Gaja Costa Russi

"The 2010 Costa Russi is unusually firm in this vintage, with far less early appeal than is typically the case. Floral, perfumed and sensual, the 2010 is going to require time in the cellar for the tannins to soften. The 2010 is likely to remain a slightly slender, classic Costa Russi built on energy, freshness and vibrancy, but all the elements are in place for this to develop into a fabulous wine. Black cherries, plums, mocha and menthol wrap around the powerful finish. The 2010 is one the most reticent, tightly-wound Costa Russis I can remember tasting. This is a great showing." - Antonio galloni

Château Pontet Canet

"Tasted at Bordeaux Index's annual 10-Year On tasting in London. The 2006 Château Pontet-Canet has an extremely pure, vivacious, perfumed bouquet with crushed violets infusing the blueberry and blackberry fruit. But it is all about the detail and precision in this wine. The palate is medium-bodied with a gentle grip in the mouth: lightly toasted black fruit, dried orange peel, cedar and a pinch of white pepper. This feels very cohesive and poised with just a touch of mint entering right on the finish. What a great wine from Alfred Tesseron and Jean-Michel Comme. Go grab the corkscrew now, but don't feel that this wine has to be opened for another 5-6 years. Tasted January 2016." - Neal Martin

Domaine Jean Grivot, Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Roncieres

"A different form of reduction is present here though the effect is the same in that the nose cannot be properly evaluated. The detailed, pure and energetic medium-bodied flavors possess good intensity before terminating in a saline and ever-so-slightly rustic finish. The tannic spine is well-integrated and this should amply reward mid-term cellaring yet be approachable after only 5 years or so of bottle age." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Fourrier, Chambolle Musigny 1er Cru Amoureuses

"Mild reduction presently renders the nose tough to read. Otherwise there is more refinement and minerality to the lacy and refined middle weight flavors that deliver excellent length on the balanced finish where a touch of wood is in evidence. This will need to add depth however to attain the upper level of my predicted range." - Allen Meadows

Almaviva

"The 2016 harvest was complicated by rain in late April, which made them hurry up and finish two weeks earlier than normal. The year was also cooler, and the 2016 Almaviva, a blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Carmenère, 8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot has less alcohol at 13.9% compared to 15% in 2014. The élevage was shortened to 16 months, and they decreased the percentage of new French barrels used—down to 77% from the 82% in the previous year. The wine is fresher and less marked by the oak, a more fluid version, with fine tannins. This is a little different, a lighter and fresher year. It was a very dry winter, complicated by rains. I found very good harmony and fine tannins, balance and freshness in one of the most elegant vintages I remember from Almaviva. This has contained power, very accessible tannins and no green notes at all. It's young but accessible and should develop nicely in bottle, as it has the balance and freshness. This is an elegant and fresh vintage for Almaviva, young and tender, taking advantage of the natural conditions for it. Well done! 180,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2017." - Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

JL Chave, Hermitage

"Chave's 2006 Hermitage is a fabulous example of the classic style of the estate, as well as of the more forward, charming nature of the vintage. Offering up a gorgeous bouquet of caramelized black fruits, cassis, tapenade, spring flowers and an undeniable minerality, this beautiful Hermitage is fresh, lively and incredibly elegant on the palate, yet still packs gorgeous amounts of fruit and texture, with plenty of wow factor. While still youthful, it delivers loads of pleasure, and will keep for another two decades or more." - Jeb Dunnuck

Domaine Taupenot-Merme, Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru

"A ripe, reticent and brooding nose features spiced plum, black raspberry, red currant and herbal notes, all of which are suffused by ferrous earth nuances. The powerful, concentrated and exceptionally rich broad-shouldered flavors possess plenty of muscle as the dense and firm mouth coating tannins will require all of 15 years to resolve. I very much like this as it's a Charmes of imposing size and weight along with explosive length yet it retains a fine sense of harmony and balance. It's one for the back of the cellar though." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Jacques Prieur, Montrachet Grand Cru

"A very backward and almost painfully primary nose only grudgingly gives up aromas of spice, acacia blossom and mildly exotic ripe yellow fruits that complement perfectly the rich and opulent broad-shouldered flavors that possess impressive reserves of dry extract plus astounding length. A 'wow' wine but note well that ample patience will be required." - Allen Meadows, Don't miss!

Domaine Antoine Jobard, Meursault 1er Cru Poruzots

'This is also notably ripe with an expressive nose of mostly yellow orchard fruit aromas that even evidence a hint of mango. There is excellent complexity on the rich, round and solidly concentrated flavors that possess a taut muscularity before concluding in a noticeably dry, clean and impressively persistent finish. This forward effort is not especially refined but it's well-balanced and as such could easily be enjoyed now.' - Allen Meadows, Outstanding

Biondi Santi Rosso di Montalcino

"I tasted this wine immediately before its final assembly from two separate vats (one stainless steel and the other glass-lined cement). The 2015 Rosso di Montalcino will be released in June of this year. This wine is beautifully endowed with bright fruit flavors of cherry and cassis that lift effortlessly from the bouquet. The warm growing season has helped shape soft and lasting fruit flavors. The wine is fresh and snappy crisp in terms of mouthfeel." - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Biondi Santi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva

"Dark red. Musky nuances give way to brighter red fruit, licorice and herbal aromas. Rich and dense, with flavors of red cherry and minerals lifted by hints of orange peel and bergamot, not to mention noteworthy but harmonious acidity. Finishes long with youthfully chewy tannins and lingering hints of violet. This strikes me as a slightly readier to drink version of Brunello Riserva from Biondi-Santi, but as always, it improves greatly with aeration so decant at least six hours ahead for maximum enjoyment." - Ian D'Agata, Vinous Media

Château Beaucastel, Châteauneuf du Pape Roussanne VV

"Also bottled two weeks ago, the 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Roussanne Vieilles Vignes is utterly killer and is as good as it gets. Huge notes of orange blossom, peach, tangerine, honeysuckle, and caramelized citrus flow from this insanely good, unctuous, heavenly textured white that possesses full-bodied richness and power, yet stays light, graceful and perfectly balanced on the palate. Drink bottles anytime over the coming 4-6 years, or cellar for a decade or more. Robert Parker once famously called this the Montrachet of the Rhône, and I wholeheartedly agree with him. Don’t miss this wine!" - Jeb Dunnuck

Domaine Faiveley, Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru Ouvrees Rodin

"Aromatically this is compositionally similar to the regular cuvée except that the fruit is slightly denser and there is notably better complexity. There is also more concentration to the gorgeously textured and highly extract-rich big-bodied flavors that also exude plenty of minerality on the caressing yet powerful finish that is initially linear yet as it sits on the palate really fans out. This superb wine does a slow build from the mid-palate on back to the massively deep finale. This possesses simply fantastic potential and should be alive and well 50 years from now if anyone has that much patience!" - Allen Meadows, Don't miss!

Gaja Chardonnay Gaia e Rey (non OWC)

"The 2013 Gaia & Rey is another step towards a more restrained style, partly because of the cool vintage and a move towards general brightness in the wines. Lemon peel, white pepper, pear and white peach notes abound in a beautifully layered, vibrant Chardonnay from Gaja. Over the last few months the 2013 has begun to open up nicely. The main vineyard for the Chardonnay is a historic plot in Treiso that is now augmented by a steeper site in Serralunga." - Antonio Galloni
