Roagna, Barbaresco Paje

"(from limestone soil): Medium red, a bit less dark and saturated than the Barbaresco Montefico. Knockout musky nose offers slightly decadent aromas of cherry liqueur, currant, plum and tobacco. Fat and plush on entry, then a bit closed on the back half, and far less sweet than the Montefico. Really clamps down on the back end: this is almost painful today. The serious tannins avoid coming off as dry but will require several years to harmonize with the wine's fruit. Very long on the aftertaste." - Stephen Tanzer

Scrio Le Macchiole (in OWC)

"The 1999 Scrio (100% Syrah aged 18 months in French demi-muids) exhibits classic Syrah characteristics of camphor/creosote intertwined with blackberry liqueur, licorice, and vanilla. With phenomenally high extract as well as tannin, massive body, and a long, pure, concentrated finish, this unfiltered beauty's dry extract numbers are nearly off the charts. Patience is required for this formidable 1999. It should be at its best between 2007-2018. It represents Italy's most compelling example of Syrah!" - Robert Parker

Domaine Francois Lamarche, Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Malconsorts (non OC)

"A menthol top note can be found on the relatively high-toned red currant aromas that are liberally laced with notes of Asian tea, orange peel, hoisin and sandalwood. There is notably more volume and mid-palate concentration to the big-bodied flavors that manage to be at once elegant yet powerful, all wrapped in a very firm, mildly austere and hugely long finale. Excellent quality here but note that patience will be required before this robust effort reaches its apogee." - Allen Meadows, Outstanding

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard, Romanee St Vivant Grand Cru

"An overtly floral, elegant and airy nose displays a huge array of spice elements on the red currant, cherry, tea, hoisin and lavender scents. The super-refined middle weight flavors possess a gorgeously sophisticated mouth feel that is at once silky yet packing plenty of punch that continues onto the harmonious finish where the persistence lasts for several minutes. I was knocked out by the palate impression because when RSV is "on", the finesse is unmatched by any of the other grands crus in Burgundy. This is quite simply a 'wow' wine." - Allen Meadows, Don't miss!

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard, Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Thorey

"An agreeably fresh nose offers up plenty of spice and earth elements that add breadth to the pretty array of rose petal and various red berry fruit scents. The mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is a really lovely combination of punch and finesse while delivering excellent depth and length on the slightly warm finale. This is more 2015 in style than the two preceding wines and a wine that should drink reasonably well young but age well too." - Allen Meadows, Outstanding

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard, Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Suchots

"A brilliantly spicy nose is comprised by notes of violet, plum, lavender, soy, Asian-style tea and black cherry. There is more volume and richness if less precision and delineation to the velvety and seductive-textured medium weight plus flavors that coat the palate on the beautifully well-balanced, persistent and equally classy finish that is quite firmly structured. The sheer level of dry extract buffering the ripe and dense tannins is impressive and as such this terrific effort should age effortlessly." - Allen Meadows, Outstanding

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard, Chambolle Musigny Clos de l'Orme

"A perfumed, airy and elegant nose features the notably ripe essence of red cherry, floral and soft spice-scented aromas. The lilting and wonderfully refined flavors dance across the middle weight flavors that terminate in a complex, balanced and dusty finale where a hint of bitter cherry arises. This beautiful effort is textbook Chambolle and highly recommended." - Allen Meadows, Outstanding

Ridge Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon

"Ridge's 2011 Monte Bello shows beautifully, even next to some of the more important vintages that are part of this vertical. Dark red cherry, plum, smoke, spices and graphite form an attractive core of flavors and textures. The 2011 is a bit slender and likely to mature earlier than some of the more structured vintages, but that only contributes to its near and medium-term accessibility. Hints of sage, lavender and black fruits add the final shades of nuance. This is one of the better showings of the 2011 from bottle." - Antonio Galloni

Louis Roederer, Cristal Rose

"As hard as it may seem to believe, the 2002 Cristal Rosé (Re-Release) is even better than the Blanc. Utterly explosive in the glass, with soaring aromatics and tremendous palate presence, the 2002 dazzles from the very first taste. With time in the glass the 2002 grows effortlessly, showing myriad shades of nuance with each successive taste. I am reminded of the vertical I did of Cristal Rosé here a few years ago. Yes, the Rosé is expensive and rare. But it also delivers the goods. And then some." - Antonio Galloni

"An exuberantly fresh and notably ripe nose combines notes of plum, black raspberry and plenty of earth that can also be found on the round, delicious and impressively dense flavors that possess a lovely mid-palate texture that contrasts somewhat with the mildly rustic finale. Domaine Armand Rousseau, Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru

"A brilliantly discreet spicy nose consists of sandalwood, essence of black cherry liqueur, violets and a hint of the sauvage. There is seriously good size, weight and power to the imposingly scaled flavors that display almost painful intensity on the driving, explosively long and very firmly structured finish where a pleasing bead of minerality appears which helps to add lift to the finish. This is powerful and presently quite compact yet my sense is that despite being very tightly wound today, it should progressively unfold such that in 7 to 8 years, it may be sufficiently civilized to enjoy if you don't wish to wait for its full maturity." - Allen Meadows

Philipponnat, Clos des Goisses

"The 2008 Clos des Goisses is just as impressive today as it has always been. Rich, dense and explosive, the 2008 exists in three dimensions, with remarkable textural depth and vertical intensity to burn. Clos des Goisses is notoriously slow to develop. Readers who can be patient will be treated to a spectacular Champagne. The blend is 55% Chardonnay and 45% Pinot Noir, which makes the 2008 a rare Clos des Goisses that favors Chardonnay. About 75% of the lots were fermented in oak. Disgorged April 2017. Dosage is 4.25 grams per liter." - Antonio Galloni

Opus One

"The 2015 Opus One is a terrific example of the year. Super-ripe and flamboyant in style, with tons of fruit pushed forward, the 2015 has a lot to offer. Today, the primary intensity of the fruit and some of the new oak need time to subside, but there is a lot to look forward to. A rush of super-ripe red cherry, plum, mocha, espresso and wild flowers build into the huge, creamy finish." - Antonio Galloni

Domaine de la Vieille Julienne, Châteauneuf du Pape Hauts Lieux

"A true “wow” wine, the deep, concentrated 2016 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Hauts-Lieux (there's 20% Mourvèdre) offers awesome notes of blackcurrants, smoked meats, graphite, crushed rocks, and licorice. Extraordinarily concentrated, perfectly balanced, structured, and long, it's another sensational wine from this estate. It needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will cruise for 15-20 after that." - Jeb Dunnuck

Bruno Giacosa, Barbaresco Riserva Asili (Red Label)

"Packaged in its distinctive red label (red is for Riserva), the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Asili represents a tremendous effort in a challenging but ultimately very rewarding vintage. This wine will be released in February 2019. The previous edition was 2011, and Bruna Giacosa tells me that it will be produced in 2016 and possibly 2017—although this has not yet been officially confirmed. In a normal vintage, production is 11,000 bottles strong, but because of reduced yields in 2014 we can expect some 8,000 bottles instead. Growing conditions in 2014 were cause for concern up until the end of August because of humidity and below average temperatures. Those conditions changed suddenly in the nick of time, bringing strong sunshine and warmth during the final stage of grape ripening. Ultimately, 2014 proved to be a long growing season with healthy fruit in reduced volume. The Rabajà cru sometimes shows a harder edge with more mineral definition. Asili, in comparison, offers gorgeous intensity and profound depth. This Riserva shows seamless integration of wild fruit, blue flower, spice, balsam herb and pencil shaving. This is a complete and complex expression with an enduring sense of dimension and structure. I can’t wait to taste this wine one day in the far future when it is further along on its promising evolutionary track." - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate
