DRC, Grands Echezeaux Grand Cru

"This is a wine that I've had the pleasure of enjoying many times since its release and one that offers fantastically rich yet not excessively ripe fruit and flavors with excellent density, concentration and superb length. The breadth of flavors and incredible texture here is outstanding and the wine offers stunning overall quality. A great wine that is only just now beginning to reveal its full potential and while the tannins are finally beginning to soften, the overall impression is still one of notable youthfulness. I underscore however that even though one could approach this now, it will last for decades. Multiple and mostly consistent notes including several examples tasted in 2016; indeed the only poor bottle that I have had was plagued with high levels of volatile acidity which was very likely due to poor storage judging from the condition of the label." - Allen Meadows

DRC, Romanee St Vivant Grand Cru

"An expressive and notably ripe nose features complex and well-layered aromas of Vosne spice, earth and moderate secondary nuance is followed by big and relatively powerful medium-bodied robust flavors that show good muscle but no rusticity on the mouth coating and lingering finish that exhibits just a hint of dryness. While this presently displays only a bit of the classic RSV velvet, I would expect this character to become more pronounced with age. Note that while I don't believe there is much, if any, remaining upside development potential, 1990 should be an exceptionally long-lived vintage for this wine. Multiple and consistent notes." - Allen Meadows

DRC, La Tache Grand Cru

"A stunning, massive, full-on and completely classic La Tâche nose that displays almost unbelievable complexity so with many different elements that it is impossible to even begin to describe them all; the primary components include ethereal and still fresh pinot fruit, clove, knock out spiciness, anise, hoisin, soy and a trace of earth but these elements only hint at the sheer depth. The flavors are big, rich, refined, classy, penetrating and superbly powerful yet everything is in perfect balance and there is more than sufficient sève to balance off the still considerable tannins. The finish is intense, pure and so long that it is haunting; I could literally still taste this wine days later after I had it because it had such a dramatic and emotional impact. In its youth, this was one of the finest young Burgundies that I have ever been privileged to try and it only seems to get better with each passing year. For my taste, this is getting close to arriving at its peak but it's not quite there though again, I stress that this is to my taste and some may find it to already be in its sweet spot of maturation. In short, this is absolutely brilliant." - Allen Meadows

DRC, La Tache Grand Cru

"Stylistically, this borrows elements from both the '97 and the '96 as it combines moderate floral notes with most of the spice, soy and hoisin of the '96 plus the densest flavors of any vintage to this point. The mid-palate doesn't have quite the same sap of the '96 and the long, dusty finish offers a hint of chocolate and violets. This too has the potential to be very long lived and even at 20 years of age, it's clear that it still has another 5ish years or so to go before it reaches its full potential. Multiple notes with consistent results; in fact, a recent bottle tasted in Burgundy was even better than the bottle in the big La Tâche tasting held in early '03." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Comte de Vogue, Musigny Grand Cru VV

"I have tasted this many times since I originally reviewed it and the '01 Musigny has displayed quite a bit of bottle variation with some examples being fantastic and others being almost difficult to like. There is some secondary development now evident on the very spicy nose that also displays notes of sandalwood, soy, dried flowers and dried herbs on the mostly red berry fruit nose. There is fine detail and ample minerality present on the intense, powerful and focused medium-bodied flavors that exhibit impeccably good balance on the explosively long finish. For my taste this is getting close to its peak but it's not quite there yet so I would suggest holding for another 2 to 4 years first. On the less impressive side, some bottles are drying out or have displayed lactic and/or cheese-like, menthol and rubber-like aromas that I have also found on a recent bottle of the Les Amoureuses (see herein)." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron, Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Boudots

"A superbly complex nose that is more Vosne than Nuits in 2005 features seductive spicy black berry fruit aromas, spice notes, particularly anise and clove as well as a touch of earth and a hint of game, all trimmed in a subtle wood toast is followed by equally complex and impeccably balanced medium full flavors that culminate in serious length where the tannins are completely buffered by the copious extract. This is perhaps not built for more than a decade of upside but it should deliver much pleasure during that time." - Allen Meadows, Outstanding

"In 2009, this is more Vosne than Nuits as the very ripe black cherry and cassis nose is exceptionally spicy and this spice character carries over to the extremely rich and full-bodied flavors blessed with copious dry extract that imparts a velvety quality to the lightly structured and persistent finish. This is pretty but like several of these '09s, right at the limit of ripeness for my taste." - Allen Meadows, Outstanding

Domaine Ponsot, Clos Vougeot VV Grand Cru

"Deep ruby. A superbly multifaceted nose offers up nose of notably ripe black berry, plum and earth as well as hints of animale and underbrush. There is outstanding power to the very concentrated and serious large-scaled flavors that are underpinned by a dense layer of dry extract that does not completely buffer the exceptionally firm tannins as they too coat the mouth. This is an old school Clos de Vougeot that is positively Cistercian in its finishing austerity. I very much like this but I would only suggest purchasing it to those who have the forbearance to wait as this will definitely not be an early drinker." - Allen Meadows

"Here the nose displays the same odd element as does the Charmes and again, it's not a flaw so much as atypical. The very round and naturally sweet medium-bodied flavors possess a velvety texture as well as fine depth on the firm, masculine and solidly persistent finish. As with the Charmes, my range offers the benefit of the doubt that the curious nose is a passing phase." - Allen Meadows

DRC, La Tache Grand Cru

"As it was from cask this is more restrained than usual and it requires aggressive swirling to coax the pure and spicy essence of red berry fruit aromas to emerge from the glass where there is a slight hint of herbal tea present. There is a similar reserve to the distinctly focused and linear flavors that enjoy a seemingly unlimited reserve of dry extract that renders the fine-grained and silky tannins almost invisible at present though I suspect that they will become much more apparent once the baby fat melts away. There is superb complexity and fantastic length and this mineral-driven effort should be capable of drinking well after only 12 years or so of bottle age but require a solid 20 before it's completely mature. While La Tâche is almost by definition a superbly elegant wine there is also always an inner core of muscle. In 2011 it seems to have more of the former and a bit less of the latter, indeed this may the first vintage in quite a while where it is ready before the Richebourg." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Jean Grivot, Nuits St Georges 1er Cru Boudots

"As it was from barrel this is still noticeably reduced so if you're tempted to try a bottle in the name of science be sure to decant it first. This is a big and very rich wine with good muscle and punch to the well-detailed flavors that possess a lovely sense of underlying tension on the austere, balanced and strikingly long finish. This is a robust effort that in 2012 is more Nuits than Vosne in character. Note that my score assumes that the reduction is a passing phase." - Allen Meadows, Outstanding

"While the wood is hardly shy here it's more moderate as it allows the floral and spice nuances on the red currant and black pinot fruit to be seen. There is good underlying tension to the mineral-inflected broad-shouldered flavors that possess fine depth and length if not the structure of a classic example. "A brilliantly discreet spicy nose consists of sandalwood, essence of black cherry liqueur, violets and a hint of the sauvage. There is seriously good size, weight and power to the imposingly scaled flavors that display almost painful intensity on the driving, explosively long and very firmly structured finish where a pleasing bead of minerality appears which helps to add lift to the finish. This is powerful and presently quite compact yet my sense is that despite being very tightly wound today, it should progressively unfold such that in 7 to 8 years, it may be sufficiently civilized to enjoy if you don't wish to wait for its full maturity." - Allen Meadows
