Domaine Armand Rousseau, Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru

"A brilliantly discreet spicy nose consists of sandalwood, essence of black cherry liqueur, violets and a hint of the sauvage. There is seriously good size, weight and power to the imposingly scaled flavors that display almost painful intensity on the driving, explosively long and very firmly structured finish where a pleasing bead of minerality appears which helps to add lift to the finish. This is powerful and presently quite compact yet my sense is that despite being very tightly wound today, it should progressively unfold such that in 7 to 8 years, it may be sufficiently civilized to enjoy if you don't wish to wait for its full maturity." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Comte de Vogue, Musigny Blanc

"A discreet touch of wood can be found on the overtly floral-infused aromas that display additional breadth in the form of Poire Williams (pear brandy), petrol and citrus zest. There is a touch of wood on the palate as well of the caressing large-scaled flavors that display an abundance of both dry extract and minerality on the impressively long and very dry finale that is a bit less youthfully austere than it usually is." - Allen Meadows

Château Lafleur

"The 2016 Lafleur is a deeply serious Pomerol that is going to need considerable cellaring. Almost opaque in the glass, it has an almost overwhelmingly intense bouquet of blackberry, oyster shell and touches of graphite; quite strict, just as it showed at en primeur, and utterly compelling. The palate is medium-bodied with edgy tannin. A typically masculine Lafleur delivering firm grip, a lot of backbone and depth, wonderful mineralité and a persistent saline finish with the length of War and Peace. Cellar this Lafleur for at least 15 years if you want to witness it firing on all cylinders." - Neal Martin

Domaine Denis Mortet, Chambertin Grand Cru

"Moderate oak is still present on the very spicy if somewhat more restrained nose that features a broad-ranging combination of earth, game, black fruit, humus and violet aromas. The sleek, intense and mineral-driven big-bodied flavors possess superb muscle and power before terminating in a balanced, saline and hugely long finish. This brilliant effort is an imposing and notably serious wine that is very Chambertin in basic character and has the structure to prove it. Patience." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron, Romanee St Vivant Grand Cru

"A restrained but still wonderfully spicy nose consists of ripe aromas of poached plum, violet, lavender and black cherry liqueur. The middle weight flavors possess a highly refined mouthfeel with a silky mid-palate yet the hugely long and slightly warm finish is borderline chewy. There is no doubting the quality of the underlying material and the length here is genuinely superb but it would be fair to observe that this is a very robust RSV. Patience will be required." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard, Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Malconsorts

"This too is notably ripe yet manages to remain wonderfully fresh with its super-spicy aromas of red currant, cherry, raspberry and lavender. There is terrific verve and power to the big-bodied, mineral-driven and concentrated flavors that deliver superb depth and length on the almost painfully intense finale. However despite all of the concentration and overt muscularity this very, very firmly structured effort remains faultlessly well-balanced though note well that this is going to require an extended snooze in a cool cellar. This is reference standard Malconsorts" - Allen Meadows, Outstanding

Domaine Comte de Vogue, Musigny Grand Cru VV

"A restrained and cool and yet perfumed and ultra-spicy array offers up aromas of dark cherry, raspberry and a wide range of floral elements. The concentrated, tautly muscular and tension-filled flavors possess excellent depth of material as well as an abundance of minerality while exhibiting excellent persistence on the firm, dusty and built-to-age finish where a hint of bitter cherry pit appears. This sleek and classy effort will need an extended stay in a cool cellar." - Allen Meadows

Domaine Faiveley, Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru Ouvrees Rodin

"Aromatically this is compositionally similar to the regular cuvée except that the fruit is slightly denser and there is notably better complexity. There is also more concentration to the gorgeously textured and highly extract-rich big-bodied flavors that also exude plenty of minerality on the caressing yet powerful finish that is initially linear yet as it sits on the palate really fans out. This superb wine does a slow build from the mid-palate on back to the massively deep finale. This possesses simply fantastic potential and should be alive and well 50 years from now if anyone has that much patience!" - Allen Meadows Don't miss!

Domaine Comte de Vogue, Musigny Grand Cru VV

"I have tasted this many times since I originally reviewed it and the '01 Musigny has displayed quite a bit of bottle variation with some examples being fantastic and others being almost difficult to like. There is some secondary development now evident on the very spicy nose that also displays notes of sandalwood, soy, dried flowers and dried herbs on the mostly red berry fruit nose. There is fine detail and ample minerality present on the intense, powerful and focused medium-bodied flavors that exhibit impeccably good balance on the explosively long finish. For my taste this is getting close to its peak but it's not quite there yet so I would suggest holding for another 2 to 4 years first. On the less impressive side, some bottles are drying out or have displayed lactic and/or cheese-like, menthol and rubber-like aromas that I have also found on a recent bottle of the Les Amoureuses (see herein)." - Allen Meadows

Château L`Eglise Clinet

"The 2005 l’Eglise-Clinet was picked 9 to 23 September. The bouquet races out of the blocks with red berry fruit, brown spices, black truffle and a whiff of smoke. Give it several minutes in the glass and it develops some gorgeous floral aromas, iris and violet, gaining precision with every swirl. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin that frame layers of red fruit infused with tea leaf, bay leaf, a touch of white pepper and an almost ferrous finish that caresses gently. This has long been a deeply impressive l’Eglise-Clinet with a half-century lifespan. Tasted at the l’Eglise-Clinet vertical at the château in April 2018." - Neal Martin

DRC, La Tache Grand Cru

"Stylistically, this borrows elements from both the '97 and the '96 as it combines moderate floral notes with most of the spice, soy and hoisin of the '96 plus the densest flavors of any vintage to this point. The mid-palate doesn't have quite the same sap of the '96 and the long, dusty finish offers a hint of chocolate and violets. This too has the potential to be very long lived and even at 20 years of age, it's clear that it still has another 5ish years or so to go before it reaches its full potential. Multiple notes with consistent results; in fact, a recent bottle tasted in Burgundy was even better than the bottle in the big La Tâche tasting held in early '03." - Allen Meadows

Château Lynch Bages

"The 1989 Lynch-Bages is one of Jean-Michel Cazes’s triumphs. At three decades, it shows absolutely no signs of slowing down. Blackberry and cedar soar from the glass just as they did from the bottle last year, and touches of graphite develop, all beautifully defined and focused. As I’ve proclaimed before, there is such energy and vigor here! The palate is medium-bodied with a fresh, minty opening. The cedar element is a little stronger than the previous bottles that I have tasted, yet there is still that symmetry and focus. This particular bottle shows a touch more development on the finish compared to others encountered over the years, with great structure and grip, notes of tobacco and just a hint of morels surfacing on the aftertaste. A remarkable Lynch-Bages that is at its peak. As an aside, Jean-Michel Cazes mentioned that there are few bottles of the 1989 remaining in their reserves. A break-in during the 1990s saw robbers of good taste steal much of their stock. Tasted from an ex-cellar bottle at the château." - Neal Martin

Château Petrus (in OWC)

"When I asked winemaker Olivier Berrouet about his greatest challenges in 2015, he replied, “Our biggest challenge is to avoid all the temptations you can have in the vineyard and in the cellar. You can go too far. With our job, if you go too far, you can’t go back. Little steps are best.” His comments eloquently explain the immense pressure of handling a seemingly pressure-less vintage like 2015 in Pomerol. But, with the devil in all the many details that are involved in the pursuit of wine perfection, if anyone has that devil by the horns, it is this incredibly talented young winemaker.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Petrus (bottled in mid-July 2017) opens in its own time to reveal crushed black cherries, warm plums, mulberries and cedar chest suggestions with touches of anise, lavender, beef drippings and wild thyme plus a waft of crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with generous, exuberant, wonderfully layered red, black and perfumed blue fruits contrasted beautifully by very ripe, very fine-grained and very firm tannins plus an ethereal line of seamless acid, finishing long and minerally. Olivier Berrouet and his team have knocked it out of the park in 2015. Look for this Pétrus to build and unfold over the next 20 years and confidently cellar this legend for 40+ years." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate

Sine Qua Non Syrah Ratsel 16 (non OC)

"Made exclusively from estate-grown fruit, the 2016 Syrah Ratsel 16 is composed of 81% Syrah, 7% Mourvèdre, 5% Petite Sirah, 2.5% Grenache and 4.5% Viognier that was fermented with 47% whole cluster. The vineyard sources are 47% Eleven Confessions, 38% The Third Twin, 13% Cumulus and 2% Molly Aida. It was aged for around 23 months in French oak, 47% new.

Deep garnet-purple in color, this Syrah from the relatively effortless, beautifully harmonious 2016 vintage comes blasting from the glass with notions of baked plums, black cherries, blackberry compote, licorice, spice cake and mocha plus sparks of cedar chest, lilacs, menthol and pencil lead. Big, full-bodied and opulently fruited, the mouth is completely coated with firm, unabashedly super plush tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with bags of bright fruit and fantastic energy. If a wine can be electric, this is off the charts high-voltage! 1,791 cases and 600 magnums were produced." - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate

Domaine Anne Gros, Richebourg Grand Cru

"Here too the toasty nose is firmly reduced. By contrast there is good freshness and verve to the very supple medium weight flavors that offer good if not special depth and persistence on the moderately firm finish. While it wouldn't be accurate to describe this as dilute, it would be to say that it's not dense. This is by no means a poor wine but it's a disappointing Richebourg." - Allen Meadows

"This is also quite floral with its array of violet, lavender and rose petal wisps that add considerable elegance to the very pretty mix of black pinot fruit, sandalwood and lovely spice elements. Sine Qua Non 11 Confessions - Capo dei Putti Syrah/Testa dei Cherubini Grenache

Capo dei Putti Syrah - 99 Jeb Dunnuck - Leading off the reds, the extended barrel-aged 2014 Syrah Capo Dei Putti boasts an insane bouquet of cedarwood, white chocolate, caramelized meats, candle way, and assorted red and black fruits. With full-bodied richness, ultra-fine tannins, and an incredible elegance, it changed every time I came back to the glass and is a multi-dimensional, riveting red wine from California. A blend of 90% Syrah and the balance Viognier, Petite Sirah, and Grenache, partially destemmed and aged 38 months in 94% new French oak, give this beauty 2-3 years of bottle age, count yourself lucky, and enjoy bottles over the following 10-15 years.

Testa dei Cherubini Grenache - 99 Jeb Dunnuck - As with the extended aged Syrah release, the 2014 Grenache Testa Dei Cherubini (80% Grenache, 15.5% Syrah, and the rest Petite Sirah and Viognier) comes all from the estate Eleven Confessions Vineyard in the Sta. Rita Hills and spent just under 38 months in 25% new French oak, with the balance in neutral barrels (varying sizes). Layers of black raspberry, cassis, white chocolate, white flowers, and Asian spices flow to a full-bodied, supple, powerful Grenache that has silky, silky tannins, a seamless texture, no hard edges, and a finish that won’t quit. It’s already approachable, yet in my experience, this extended élevage results in a very stable wine, and I suspect this beauty will have another two decades of longevity.

Giacomo Conterno, Barolo Riserva Monfortino

"The 2013 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a huge, towering wine marked by serious fruit intensity and a backbone of firm, classically austere tannins. Certainly next to the 2014 and 2015, the sheer tannic clout of the 2013 is impossible to miss. Sage mint, tobacco and dried flower notes add striking shades of aromatic nuance, but the 2013 is ultimately distinguished by its huge, potent personality. It is sure to thrill those who own it for many decades to come. In 2013, Roberto Conterno did not bottle his Barolo Francia. Instead, he chose to use all of the fruit for the flagship Barolo Monfortino, which up until the present, he had only done once before, in 2002." - Antonio Galloni

"While the wood is hardly shy here it's more moderate as it allows the floral and spice nuances on the red currant and black pinot fruit to be seen. There is good underlying tension to the mineral-inflected broad-shouldered flavors that possess fine depth and length if not the structure of a classic example. Sassicaia

"The 2008 Bolgheri Sassicaia is a wine without a winemaker. The last vintage made by Giacomo Tachis was 2007 and incoming enologist Graziana Grassini claims 2009 as her first vintage. Within the context of this retrospective, the 2008 vintage opens a new chapter, because it is the first wine to show evident tertiary definition and complexity. In fact, the wine performs beautifully with an exalted performance and ethereal aromas. They include cassis, wild berry, crushed mineral, licorice, petrol and grilled herb. This wine is really coming together now and is entering a very exciting moment in its drinking life. It boasts finesse, elegance and grace. Yet, it also shows unmistakable richness and structure that gives the wine an enormous presence in terms of mouthfeel. This was one of the top highlights of the retrospective." - Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

"As hard as it may seem to believe, the 2002 Cristal Rosé (Re-Release) is even better than the Blanc. Utterly explosive in the glass, with soaring aromatics and tremendous palate presence, the 2002 dazzles from the very first taste. With time in the glass the 2002 grows effortlessly, showing myriad shades of nuance with each successive taste. I am reminded of the vertical I did of Cristal Rosé here a few years ago.

This possesses simply fantastic potential and should be alive and well 50 years from now if anyone has that much patience!" - Allen Meadows, Don't miss!

Pol Roger, Cuvee Sir Winston Churchill

"Pol Roger’s 1996 Winston Churchill is fabulous. One of the most expressive, complete 1996s today, the Winston Churchill is in a great spot. Butter, spice, almond and lemon oil notes meld together effortlessly in the glass. In 1996, the Winston Churchill is a clear overachiever. Best of all, it remains reasonably priced vis-à-vis its peers." - Antonio Galloni

Château La Mission Haut Brion

"The 2016 La Mission Haut-Brion was stunning from barrel, and now in bottle. It has a sublime bouquet of blackberries, briar and hints of dark chocolate and rose petals that gain intensity with aeration while maintaining ethereal delineation. It never steps on the accelerator too hard. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin. There is still a veneer of new oak that will need to be assimilated over the coming years. This is a deep La Mission that caresses the mouth. Touches of graphite lingering on a finish that fans out gloriously. Is the 2016 up there with the 1955 or 1989? Nearly." - Neal Martin
