Red Wines

Red Wine is made by crushing and fermenting red grapes on their skins whereas white wines are pressed before fermentation, separating the juice from the skins. This skin contact allows colour, flavour, texture and tannin to integrate into the juice. The resulting red wine might be characterised by deep rich flavours of blackberries, plum and black cherries - depending on which variety is used and how the wine is made. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah/Shiraz, Malbec and Grenache are all popular red grape varieties but there are over a thousand more worldwide and many are vinified to make a lighter fresher style of red, think strawberry scented Gamay from Beaujolais or cherry noted English Pinot Noir. Red wine is a very versatile category, it can cover everything from easy drinking, youthful reds to red wines that will age for decades to come.  There really is something for everyone.
