Fruity Red Wines

Fruity red wines focus on the primary fruit characteristics of the grape, offering a wine that is bright, fresh, and bursting with ripe fruit character. Usually it’s best to drink fruity red wines while they’re still young, as all of that youthful fruitiness will be emphasised, before the ageing process fades the brightness of the fruit and starts to bring forward more earthy, savoury notes.

Fruity reds can be light and juicy, such as wines made from Gamay and Pinot Noir, usually grown in cooler regions such as Burgundy, Germany and England, yet they can also be more medium to full-bodied, such as Pinot Noir from California, Grenache from Australia, or Merlot from Chile. The lighter style of fruity red will typically show red berry character, such as strawberries or cranberries, while the more full-bodied may show dark fruits such as plums or blackberries.
