highlights:

  • Only 662 cases produced from a three-acre parcel, the smallest at Domaine de la Côte
  • Earthy in character, reminiscent of fine Burgundy, with a touch of Californian warmth
  • Multiple acclaimed ratings: 97 PTS - James Suckling, 94 PTS - Wine Enthusiast, 94 PTS - Antonio Galloni, 95 PTS - Wine Spectator, 93 PTS - Wine Advocate

TASTING PROFILE:

"The perfumed nose of Memorious lies halfway between roasted strawberry and black cherry, set against a backdrop suggestive of a blooming flower garden, a pinch of fresh pipe tobacco, and bitter, but not too-dark chocolate. Upon first sip, a lush cloud of fine, sweet tannins coats the mouth, juxtaposing the wine’s silkiness of texture with its durable, coiled strength.

The quiet intensity detectable in the mid-palate leads inevitably to a long and persistent finish. Even in its youth the wine is complex and approachable, but will have a long life in bottle." - Jordan Mackay

in the vineyard

  • Situated above the Santa Ynez River, adjacent and downslope from Bloom’s Field
  • Vineyard gently bends to the southwest, opening to the Pacific Ocean and absorbing its winds
  • Rests on Monterey Shale bedrock, blanketed by alluvial deposits, creating the domaine's heaviest, deep brown clay soil
  • The name 'Memorious' pays homage to its one-acre of Pinot Noir seedlings planted in 2007, symbolising the "memories" of Pinot Noir and a commitment to cultivating a distinctive genetic selection of this world-renowned grape

IN THE WINERY:

  • Indigenous yeast fermentation in open concrete tanks
  • Aged for 10 months in 30% new French oak, enhancing complexity

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Enjoy with earthy, gamey food, roast meat or mushroom dishes.

PRESS HIGHLIGHTS:

97 PTS - JAMES SUCKLING - "Crushed stone, raspberry and strawberry character. Medium-bodied with density and a toned structured. White pepper notes come through. Racy and bright. Drink or hold."

95 PTS - WINE ENTHUSIAST - "This very young wine possesses an immensely layered profile, so expect lots of exciting evolution in the years to come. Dense aromas of bay leaf, wild mint, damp peppercorns and yerba santa relay the stem inclusion on the nose. Tense, angular tannins frame the palate, where muddled elderberry and plum flavors play against the intense herbaceousness. Drink 2025–2040."

95 PTS - WINE SPECTATOR - "Alluring, with singed black tea and sandalwood nuances leading off, followed by a core of red and black cherry fruit flavors that bristle with coiled-up energy, while tobacco, warm earth and savory notes infuse the finish. Reveals a nice buried iron edge, too. This needs some cellaring to fully unwind. Best from 2025 through 2035. 662 cases made."

94 PTS - ANTONIO GALLONI - "The 2021 Pinot Noir Memorious is dark, fleshy and super-expressive, within the context of this generally brighter, leaner vintage. As always, there's quite a bit of stem influence, but those savory notes are beautifully woven into the fruit. Clay rich soils add notable depth, while west-facing exposure conveys energy. That dualism makes for a compelling Pinot endowed with brooding dark fruit and notable textural intensity."

93 PTS - ROBERT PARKER'S WINE ADVOCATE - "The 2021 Pinot Noir Memorious comes from the smallest parcel at Domaine de la Côte (about three acres), where vines grow on clay soils and are subjected to lots of wind. It has a pale ruby-purple color and scents of wild raspberry and blackberry with nuances of tangerine, dried herbs and lavender. The palate is light-bodied and delicately styled with chalky tannins and energetic acidity, finishing long and perfumed."
