To the north of Montpellier, in the foothills of the Cevennes Mountains, with some of the highest altitude vineyards in the Languedoc is the Terrasses du Larzac AOC. This fledgling appellation, created in 2005, is strictly reserved to red wines, where Southern French staples Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault & Carignan are grown to produce deep coloured, full bodied, fruit forward wines. Mas des Brousses's expression is unique and not quite like any other we've tried. A perfect balance between Mediterranean warmth with the freshness of Larzac makes for a wonderful Autumnal wine.

The domaine has been in Géraldine Coumbes family since 1525, along with her husband Xavier Peyraud they started the estate Mas des Brousses in 1997. With just 10 hectares under vine, they are able to tend to and care for the land in a way that is impossible to do on a larger scale.

"This is statuesque. Magnificent. This is Mourvèdre bearing all the sumptuous indigo-shadow depth of its richness and mountain-mine concentration, but with a stunning sense of reined-back power. Articulate elegance. A storm rumbling on the horizon; the smell of rain on the air. Not a wine that I would describe as restrained or controlled, in the sense of the full expression or a tumultuous force being held back, but there is a sense of glistening, calm, chiselled-black-metal minerality inset with jewels of blueberry and blackcurrant fruit.
