This Condrieu from Domaine Merlin is a blend of Viognier from four different sites in Condrieu, the emblematic varietal in this part of the world. It is a distinguished, lively, and generous white, marked by a beautifully tense palate with rich aromas of apricots and orange blossom honey.
Francois Merlin is a kind of ‘rara avis’ when it comes to winemakers in the Northern Rhone. First generation and largely self-taught, Francois had access to little of the advantages many other producers were born with. Despite this, the past decades have seen Francois emerge as one of the region’s most celebrated winemakers.
Now stretching a total of 9ha across the regions of Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, and Cote-Rotie, the land is meticulously and sustainably farmed. Joined by sons Laurent and Julien, the emphasis continues to lie in the vineyard, where yields are kept low and canopies painstakingly managed.
These wines - like the Condrieu Terroirs - are testament to the mastery of Francois and his sons. Distinguished by remarkable depth and concentration, this bottle is a remarkable example of all Condrieu can offer.
