This is a rich and elegant Super Tuscan from the renowned Tenuta San Guido winery, producers of the acclaimed Sassicaia. A fine red, this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot opens with bright aromas of red fruit and dark berries with just a hint of earthiness and savoriness. Full-bodied on the palate, great ripeness of fruit and grippy tannins indicate the elegance of this bottle.

92/100 - The 2020 Guidalberto is taut and tight with plenty of tart cherry and wild berry. The wine offers great freshness and tension with bay leaf, spice, wild cherry and pressed lavender buds. There is a hint of black olive too. - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

92/100 - The 2020 Guidalberto is a gorgeous, classy wine. Less opulent than it can be, the 2020 impresses with its energy and drive. Sweet red cherry, plum, mint, rose petal, cedar and pipe tobacco all take shape in this super-attractive, mid-weight offering from Tenuta San Guido. There's a bit more Merlot in the 2020, but Guidalberto is increasingly made from lots that don't make it into Sassicaia, which explains the style of recent vintages. This is a terrific showing, especially considering the recent bottling. It's a fine relative value in Bolgheri's high-rent district. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

16.5/20 - Deep, lustrous crimson but with no blueish tints. Very heady, voluptuous nose but not at all sweet. In fact it finishes dry with an attractive balsamic note. Excellent balance and sappy structure – very much a food wine. Too dry for a Manhattan cocktail bar! Good, serious wine that is usefully well advanced. Medium persistence. - Jancis Robinson MW

95/100 - Guidalberto 2020 is a blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, matured for 15 months in oak (20% new), including a small percentage of American oak. The aromas are a little heavier, with ripe dark fruit and a fragrant, floral note. It's a little less finely detailed aromatically than the 2021, with some smoke, spice and green herb qualities. The palate is round, medium-full bodied with juicy, bright acidity. It's a very friendly wine with very fine tannins and there's a little more grip and silty texture to the tannins. Susan Hulme MW, Decanter

The second wine of Tenuta San Guido and the brother to the legendary Sassicaia. Set in rolling hills near the Tuscan coast Tenuta San Guido has been a pioneer in bringing Bordeaux varieties to western Tuscany and cementing the Bolgheri area as one of Italy's best, so much so in fact that there is now a DOC dedicated solely for Sassicaia. While Sassicaia is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with some Cab Franc, Guidalberto contains 50% Merlot, with the rest Cabernet Sauvignon, so rather than being seen as a 'little brother' it really stands out as a wine of its own.

This wine comes from fruit that doesn’t make it into Sassicaia itself but still from top quality vineyards. Now, taking into account that Sassicaia is trading at over £200 per bottle this makes Guidalberto an absolute steal.
