Donnachadh's Estate Pinot Noir masterfully blends vibrant New World fruit intensity with the structured elegance of Old World style. It showcases aromas of black cherries, raspberries, sage, black tea, and a hint of baking spice. The palate is a rich tapestry of juicy dark fruits, framed by robust tannins and lively acidity, promising excellent ageing potential. Enjoy it now with a bit of decanting or watch it evolve beautifully over the years. It's aged 15 months in French oak barrels, with 20% new oak, utilizing Calera, Pommard, 115, and 667 clones. It earned 96 points from Wine Advocate and 93 points plus a "Cellar Selection" from Wine Enthusiast, suggesting it will drink well through 2040—there's no hurry.
The 2020 vintage in Santa Rita Hills experienced a typical cool spring and summer, punctuated by a warm spell that perfectly ripened the grapes. Fortuitous timing allowed for harvesting after the heatwave, ensuring the grapes arrived at the winery cool. This pattern of late-season warmth recurs biennially, noted in ’17, ’20, and ’22, but not in ’16, ’18, ’19, or ’21.
