U.S.A. > California > Napa Valley
At Smith-Madrone, the goal is to make artisanal wines that bring pleasure to the senses. Every year, the wine is made from the same vineyards, pruned by the same people in the same way and cultivated in exactly the same manner. The result? A stunning and well-constructed Chardonnay and fantastic value!
95/100 - This Chardonnay represents one of California’s great-value wines, particularly in the context of the Napa Valley, where wine prices continue to rise. Barrel fermented and aged for nine months in 55% new French oak. Ronan Sayburn MS: Smoky and bright style showing great acidity and a tight, lemony citrus palate. Saline and mouth-watering. Eugenio Egorov: Bold and powerful on the nose, fresh and linear on the palate. Beautiful hints of lemon custard and shortbread. Great complexity and freshness. Ben Gubbins: Toffee, honey, ripe apple. Lots of freshness and zingy citrus notes. Really sings. Although the alcohol glows on the finish it still doesn’t feel too heavy. - Ronan Sayburn MS, Eugenio Egorov, Ben Gubbins, Decanter
91/100 - The barrel-fermented 2018 Chardonnay saw 55% new French oak, noticeable on the nose as a delicate cedar, pencil-shavings note and hints of baking spices. The initial woodiness is backed by scents of white peaches and tart pineapples, ample weight on the medium to full-bodied palate and a crisp, taut finish. What stands out about this effort is its remarkable length on the finish, crisp and lemony without being excessively sour, ultimately adding great refreshment. - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate

92/100 - Barrel-fermented and aged in 55% new French oak, this perennially impressive white is creamy and seamless on the palate, in ripe layers of pear, pineapple and vanilla bean. Balanced acidity and structure keep it focused and finessed.  - Virginie Boone, Wine Enthusiast
91/100 - This has a tropical character with hints of pastry crust, honeysuckle and cream. Full and waxy with bright acidity and a juicy mid-plate. Creamy finish. Drink now. - James Suckling

On the nose, oak, toast and nuttiness all combine delightfully with the minerality and lemon notes.  On the palate, the wine is an impressive mouthful. It is opulent and creamy, yet laced with an enlivening acid that seamlessly leads to a crisp refreshing finish. All in all, this is a terrific wine for food as well as a delicious wine to drink for its own sake.

Smith-Madrone

A visit to Stuart and Charles Smith’s winery, high up on Spring Mountain, is like a journey back to the halcyon days of 1970s Napa Valley. This is not the land of technological wine making, fancy tasting rooms and slick marketing – this is a down-home, honest and authentic wine estate that has remained largely unchanged since it was established...
