This intriguing blend of Poulsard and Trousseau (with just a bit of Pinot Noir) comes from Dupuis, the newest adventure of California wine revolutionary Wells Guthrie. Located high up in the mountains of California's Anderson Valley, Dupuis symbolizes Wells' move away from the fast-paced ethos of his Copain label towards wine making at its most pure. This blend encapsulates his pioneering and experimental style, as it makes use of two grapes often overlooked in the United States in favour of more common varieties.
Etoile Rouge is a co-fermented blend made from Trousseau, Poulsard, and 5% Pinot Noir. It is named for the small commune in the heart of the Jura region where Trousseau and Poulsard are the dominant, native varieties.
The fruit is crushed to small, 1-ton oak tanks where fermentation occurs spontaneously with native yeasts.
The wine completes malolactic fermentation and ages in neutral French oak barrels.
Subtle earthy aromatics and flavours accent the dark red fruit profile. Finishes with velvety tannins and balanced acidity.
This wine is sourced from the Klindt vineyard in Anderson Valley, farmed by Norman Koblar. It was planted in 2001 atop weathered sandstone and gravelly loam soils. All plantings were done with Massal and Heritage clonal selections.
